The members of the Society of Unknowable Objects have come to understand that practically no one is ready to have magic as part of their everyday lives. Innocuous things possessed of extraordinary powers are loose in the world and someone needs to shepherd them back to safety. The members meeting in the bookstore in London have had many quiet years but now something is changing. Just preserving the secret may no longer be an option. After a new object turns up in Hong Kong, Magda Sparks is sent to recover it. What would appear to be a simple task rapidly goes awry, and things become progressively worse when others who comprehend the power and use of the objects are discovered acting on their own agendas.
